Bend, Oregon is located on the banks of the Upper Deschutes River, which was originally named “river of falls” or “Riviere aux Chutes” by French fur traders in the early 1800s. The French traders exercised a bit of poetic license, however, since the falls they admired so much is not on the Deschutes itself but on the Columbia River, near the mouth of the Deschutes (Celilo Falls).

The desert climate consists of clear, sunny days and cool comfortable nights. For recreation, the choices are many and varied. One example is Mt. Bachelor, which is half an hour’s drive away. With 70 runs, several day lodges and seven express chairs, Mt. Bachelor is currently ranked among the top 10 ski areas in the country.

A quieter brand of enjoyment may also be found in birding, picnicking or just strolling through town. For those who prefer shopping, Bend possesses several shopping malls, a factory outlet center and many specialty shops. Bend also provides entertainment in the form of community theater and the Obsidian Opera Company, as well as the “Munch and Music” concert series during summer.
